The Oglethorpe University Theatre is kicking off a new season with a production of a Shakespeare classic, “The Tempest”. One of the Bard’s final plays, “The Tempest” is a fantastical tale of magic, mystery, love, power and control.

The play tells the story of Prospero, a gifted magician and the usurped Duke of Milan, as he flees to a remote island with his young daughter, Miranda. Using his abilities, Prospero captures the island’s only two inhabitants to serve as his attendants: the monster Caliban and the spirit Ariel. There on the island, the four live in seclusion, never to encounter another human being.

However, when the magician divines that his enemies — including his own brother Antonio who stole the throne from him — are near, he calls forth his powers to shipwreck him and his crew, setting “The Tempest” in motion.
