Last Saturday, members of the Oglethorpe community met virtually to hold a public discussion on race. Current and incoming students, faculty and staff submitted their thoughts, insights and questions, as a panel took turns speaking about the importance of racial equality within the Oglethorpe community and beyond. This forum is the first of many discussions meant to connect, support and grow the Oglethorpe community as the country engages in a national dialogue about race.

Speakers on the panel included:

• David Swillum ’21 – President of Collegiate 100
• Chris Williams ’21
• Dr. Kendra King-Momon – Professor of Politics
• Dr. Janelle Pham – Assistant Professor of Sociology
• Dr. Kristen Clayton – Assistant Professor of Sociology
• Dr. Katherine Zakos – Assistant Professor of Communication Studies
• Dr. Iona Wynter-Parks – Lecturer of French
• Dr. Kate Keib – Assistant Professor of Communication Studies
• Richard Bakare ’03 – Alumni Board of Trustees, President

Both current president Larry Schall and incoming president Dr. Nick Ladany were present for the discussion. Near the end of the forum, Dr. Ladany thanked each speaker and re-emphasized his commitment to diversity and inclusion.

“A primary leadership goal for me is to build upon Oglethorpe’s traditions and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and become a model university that truly demonstrates that commitment,” said Dr. Ladany.
