In collaboration with the Oglethorpe chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Oglethorpe’s Career Services office hosted an Oct. 27 panel of six Latino media professionals from the Atlanta area who shared their experiences and gave advice for students seeking a career in communications fields
Moderated by Andrea Rivera, founder and chief executive officer of H3 Media, the panel included Ivan Shammas, president of Univision Atlanta and Univision Raleigh; Orlando Rosa, program director at iHeart Media; Gina Sanchez, president of Gisache Entertainment; Jorge Gomez, marketing director at Plaza Fiesta; and Isabel Carlota, who leads her own marketing and communications company.
Each panelist shared the origin of their career in communications, and the lessons they learned along the way. They congratulated the students for participating in the event and encouraged them to take advantage of every opportunity to network, make connections, learn, grow as practitioners and give back to the community.
While their advice applied broadly to anyone pursuing careers in communications, the panelists noted that Latinos in media have a strong bond and are supportive of each other as they work to achieve their individual and shared goals.
PRSSA’s next event will be a panel featuring Oglethorpe University alumni on Nov. 16.
The Oglethorpe University chapter of PRSSA was founded in 2018 and is open to any Oglethorpe student. This student professional organization encourages the understanding of the current theories, principles and procedures in the practice of public relations; provides students with the opportunity to become familiar with their peers who are interested in communication professions and with professional practitioners; and encourages students to embody a professional attitude while adhering to the utmost ideals and practice of public relations.
