Video: Georgia Aquarium internship trains staff and student

Deciding where she wanted to pursue an internship was simple for Cinthia Flores ’18.

“I’m a huge fanatic of animals of all sorts,” Flores said. Discovering an internship opportunity at the Georgia Aquarium on the A_LAB website made it a no-brainer.

“When I got an interview, I was ridiculously ecstatic,” she added.

As a training intern, Flores assists with program outreach and volunteer orientation, learns the fundamentals of the aquarium’s training program, and develops her own training course for a capstone project. Flores focused on the harmful results of plastics in the oceans and potential conservation efforts as her project.

Much of Flores’ learning is on-the-job, but as a business administration major, she came into her position with all the tools she needed.

“The whole liberal arts education of Oglethorpe helped prepare me for my internship,” she said. “My management courses definitely prepared me for [the training program], but the Core also helps implement different ways of thinking and approaching problems.”
