Oglethorpe Athletics COVID-19 Updates & Policies

The health and safety of Oglethorpe student-athletes, fans, and staff are our top priority in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. To that end, we are continuing several initiatives for athletic events this academic year (2021-2022). These initiatives are guided by the recommendations of public health authorities, the state of Georgia, and appropriate university and government agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Below are several important items to note.

Testing

  • All Tier 1 individuals who are not fully vaccinated will be required to receiving weekly PCR testing. These PCR tests will be conducted within 3 days of the first competition of the week.
  • No weekly testing will be required for fully vaccinated student-athletes, unless symptomatic or identified as a close contact of a documented COVID-19 case.

Close Contacts

  • Not fully vaccinated individuals will quarantine based on current local health department guidelines (i.e., 10 days or after 7 days if symptom-free and a negative test after day 5 from exposure).
  • Fully vaccinated individuals will mask when in public indoor settings for 14 days with discontinuation if a COVID-19 test is performed 3-5 days after exposure and is negative, or if assessment does not reveal high risk.

Positive Test Protocol

  • If an individual tests positive, they will be required to be in isolation for 10 days and at least 24 hours must have passed since resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications and improvement of other symptoms.
  • EKG plus any additional cardiac follow-up is to be considered prior to return to athletic participation.
  • A gradual return to play/participation will be employed following a documented COVID-19 infection.

Fan Expectations

  • Beginning March 4, 2022, there are no mask requirements on Oglethorpe's campus for indoor or outdoor events.
  • Social distancing and maintaining proper cleanliness continues to be encouraged.

Oglethorpe will continue to evaluate these guidelines, which are subject to change pending further recommendations from university, local, state, and federal authorities.
