Two outstanding Oglethorpe University theatre students have secured nominations for Best Supporting Performer in a Musical by BroadwayWorld Atlanta, one of the nation’s largest theater review sites.
Emma Jean Scott was recognized for her captivating performance as the young ingénue-turned-resistance leader Hope Cladwell in Urinetown, last year’s annual co-production of Oglethorpe University and Atlanta theatre company Actor’s Express.
Wynne Kelly was nominated for a dazzling performance as Lauren, a spunky and industrious love interest in Kinky Boots for Out Front Theatre — Atlanta’s largest LGBTQ+ theatre company.
“Urinetown” was also nominated for six other awards by BroadwayWorld Atlanta, including “Best Musical,” “Best Ensemble,” “Best Choreography,” “Best Direction in a Musical,” “Best Scenic Design of a Musical,” and “Best Performer in a Musical” for Russell Scott’s performance as Bobby Strong.
The production received widespread acclaim during its run last year — ArtsATL called it “Atlanta’s first truly must-see, 10-out-of-10 production of 2023.” “Urinetown” was recently nominated for six Suzi Bass Awards, one of which recognized then-freshman Tatum McBride for her performance as “Little Sally.”
Voting for the BroadwayWorld Atlanta Awards is open now for the public. As of the publication of this article, Wynne Kelly sits at first place for “Best Supporting Performer.” Emma Jean Scott sits at third place.
The annual collaboration of Oglethorpe University and Actor’s Express provides a yearly opportunity for Oglethorpe theatre students to gain valuable professional experience both on-stage and off. This year’s co-production will be the bombastic dance musical “Everybody’s Talking about Jamie.”
“Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” is set to hit the Conant stage Feb. 17, 2024. Tickets on sale now at Actor’s Express. The Oglethorpe University community will have special access to tickets later this year.
