Dr. Patricia A. Matthew will deliver several lectures and workshops as part of the Spring Symposium on Inclusive Excellence. The symposium is a collaboration between Oglethorpe University’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Office of the Provost, and Agnes Scott College’s Center for Teaching, Learning, and Professional Development.
Dr. Matthew’s lecture, “Written and Unwritten: Diversity and the Hidden Truths of Tenure” on Monday, February 14 at 1 p.m. is free and open to all members of the Oglethorpe community.
Dr. Matthew is Associate Professor of English at Montclair State University and the editor of “Written/Unwritten: Diversity and the Hidden Truths of Tenure.” This influential book follows the experiences of scholars of color as they navigate the tenure process. Dr. Matthew has conducted extensive research on the tenure process and works with institutions to identify barriers that negatively impact the retention of diverse faculty.
“We are excited to welcome Dr. Matthew to share her knowledge and work with the Oglethorpe community,” said Dr. Laura Renée Chandler, vice president of diversity, equity, and inclusion at Oglethorpe. “As we continue to advance diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at Oglethorpe, it is important to understand the barriers that BIPOC faculty face across higher education so that we can develop solutions that better serve our faculty, and by extension, our students.”
Dr. Matthew will also host workshops with senior leaders and a listening session with faculty of color.
“I look forward to hearing from and working with Dr. Matthew during her time with us,” said Dr. Kathryn McClymond, provost and vice president of academic affairs at Oglethorpe. “Her extensive research in the areas of faculty hiring, tenure and promotion will provide valuable insight as we enhance processes to support all of our faculty.”
Dr. Matthew’s work has been featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. Learn more about the upcoming lecture and how to join on OU Connect.
