For the first time in nearly three decades, a new chorale director will be conducting the University Singers during their fall concert, Contact Light!

Dr. Timothy Michael Powell leads the student chorale group in “themes of light, darkness, and the journey into the unknown,” including two original compositions by Powell, one of which, “A World Without Boundaries,” in its world debut.

Dr. Powell comes to Oglethorpe by way of teaching positions at Rhodes College, Lee College, Davidson Fine Arts School and Martin Methodist College, and took the helm as Director of Chorale Activities from long-time faculty staple Dr. Irwin W Ray in fall 2017.

He was also one of only 25 educators in the country to be named a semifinalist for the 2016 Grammy Music Educator Award, an honor that highlights the impactful work of music teachers.

Outside of teaching, Dr. Powell is also a decorated composer, having works premiered in New York’s Carnegie Hall.
