Alumni Weekend 2024 brings friends and classmates together

Alumni Weekend at Oglethorpe University drew more than 400 alumni to campus eager to reignite old connections and create new memories. From spirited gatherings to heartwarming reunions, the weekend was a testament to the enduring bond that ties Oglethorpe alumni together.

Enthusiastic alumni participants kicked off the weekend’s festivities during a luncheon with retired and current faculty and staff on Friday, April 19. The room buzzed with laughter and chatter, as alumni listened to a panel of current students, faculty and staff share their mentorship experiences. The fun on Friday continued into the evening with the 2024 Alumni Awards and Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony, honoring esteemed and dedicated alumni.

The event-filled weekend included many opportunities to engage with the Oglethorpe community. Whether it was listening to President McClymond share her vision for the university, enjoying crafts and games during the Quadfest Family Picnic, ringing the Carillon bells, cheering on the Stormy Petrels baseball team, or participating in alumni basketball and soccer games, there was no shortage of ways to reconnect.

A new event on the schedule this year gave alumni a “Taste of Oglethorpe” as they learned about various offices on campus – Student Success, Career Development, Global Education, Athletics and more – and heard from students about their experiences, while sampling food and beverages at each location across campus. Alongside the new highlights, the longstanding tradition of the Golden Petrel Society Induction was held to officially celebrate the Class of 1974 on their 50th reunion.

Throughout these events, alumni shared stories, reminisced about their college days, and reconnected with friends and classmates. The energy on campus was high as alumni from various graduating classes came together, united by their shared experiences at Oglethorpe. From recent graduates to seasoned professionals, everyone found common ground in their shared love of the university.

“We had an amazing time returning to campus to celebrate our 10-year reunion,” said Clara Robertson ’14. “From playing in the alumni soccer game, reuniting with friends at Stomp the Lawn, and our reunion party, it was a special weekend of reconnecting with friends and reminiscing on our time as students. Campus was just as warm and electric as it was 10 years ago. It always feels like home. Can’t wait for next year!”

As the sun set on Saturday evening, alumni gathered on the Quad and enjoyed lively music, great food, and meaningful conversations. Bonds were strengthened, friendships were rekindled, and new connections were forged – all while celebrating special reunions and cherished time on campus.

Ultimately, Alumni Weekend was a resounding success, leaving participants filled with warm memories and new connections. It was a testament to the enduring sense of community that defines the Oglethorpe experience—a community where lifelong friendships are formed, and memories are made to last a lifetime.
