Georgia Author of the Year to give opening keynote at Oglethorpe’s Liberal Arts and Sciences Symposium

Oglethorpe University’s annual Liberal Arts and Sciences Symposium (LASS) will be held April 24-28, 2023. LASS brings together students and faculty in a celebration of exemplary scholarly work produced by Oglethorpe students under faculty mentorship. This year, a series of events will be held throughout the week of April 24, with a full-day program on Friday, April 28.

Author Anjali Enjeti

Opening keynote speaker Anjali Enjeti

Opening the celebration is keynote speaker Anjali Enjeti, an activist, author, professor and journalist who was named Georgia Author of the Year in 2022.

As part of Enjeti’s visit, the Weltner Library—in partnership with the committee commemorating the 75th anniversary of independence in India and Pakistan—is organizing a group read of her latest book, The Parted Earth. Interested OU community members will receive a copy of the book courtesy of the Library, as well as a lunch and discussion with Professor Enjeti when she visits campus. If you’re interested in participating, please fill out this online form form by March 10.

Friday’s sessions will provide a forum for students and faculty to present, discuss, and learn from outstanding student endeavors. Papers, roundtables, oral and poster presentations, art exhibitions, and scholarly musical presentations showcase undergraduate research across the curriculum.

Call for Proposals – Deadline March 27

The 2023 LASS Committee is now accepting student proposals for participation in this flagship Oglethorpe event. Students wishing to present on April 28 are required to submit a proposal or abstract of their work for consideration. A committee of faculty from a variety of disciplines including the humanities and sciences will convene to review proposals and abstracts.

In addition, proposals are now being accepted for “Making a Difference”: Highlighting OU Student Activism and Service, an event spotlighting the various ways Oglethorpe students are making a difference in their communities — whether on campus or beyond — that are not necessarily captured through academic work. This provides a dedicated space to celebrate and highlight the achievements of our students beyond the classroom, including student clubs and organizations, internships, and community service.  Any Oglethorpe student can submit a proposal to present their contributions in a poster or panel session. Panel sessions will consist of brief (5-7 minute) presentations. The event will take place on Tuesday, April in the Turner Lynch Campus Center, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

The deadline for proposal submissions is 11:59 PM on Monday, March 27, 2023. Notification of proposal acceptance will be Friday, March 31. Proposals may be submitted via the LASS website.

Additional LASS events will include a persuasive speech competition (Wed., April 26, 1-2 p.m.) and Hammack School of Business internship presentations (Thurs., April 27, 1-2 p.m.).
