Oglethorpe announces events celebrating Black History Month

Happy Black History Month! Be sure to join Oglethorpe faculty, staff, and students in celebrating and honoring the Black experience. See the selected items below. Check OU Connect throughout the month for upcoming events and programs!

School Daze: Film Screening and Discussion, Feb. 8 at 6:00 p.m. at Look Cinema (Town Brookhaven)
Join DYNASTTY, Collegiate 100, and Beautiful Black Brains for a screening of Spike Lee’s iconic film, “School Daze,” followed by a discussion with students and staff. The film is free for OU faculty, staff, and students. Refreshments will be provided.

“shanequa gay: thought and memory,” Feb. 14 at 6:00 p.m. in Skylight Gallery, Oglethorpe University Museum of Art
Celebrate the opening of the OUMA’s latest exhibition, “shanequa gay: thought and memory,” featuring the work of Atlanta artist Shanequa Gay. The exhibition is the culmination of Gay’s 2022-2023 residency at Oglethorpe University.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Sunday, Feb. 19 at 3:00 p.m., Fox Theatre 
Join the Offices of DEI and Career Development for an afternoon of Alvin Ailey: American Dance Theater at Fox Theatre in Downtown Atlanta. Limited spots are available. RSVP here.

TILL: Film Screening and OU Faculty/Student Discussion, Feb. 21 at 6:00 p.m. at Look Cinema (Town Brookhaven)
TILL follows educator and activist Mamie Till-Bradley on her campaign for justice after the brutal and racist murder of her 14-year-old son Emmett Till. Marc Collins (OU Senior Class President) starred in the film and after the screening will join OU faculty to discuss the story’s significance. The film is free for OU faculty, staff, and students. Refreshments will be provided.

Black in STEM Panel, Feb. 23 at 6:00 in Trustee Room, Turner Lynch Campus Center
In celebration of Black History Month, join Career Development for a discussion with Black professionals working in various STEM fields. All are encouraged to attend to network and learn about career paths and successes in STEM.
