This year marks the 20^th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001. As observances are held throughout the country to remember the events that unfolded that day, the Oglethorpe community mourns and honors John P. Salamone who tragically lost his life in the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City.

Salamone graduated from Oglethorpe in 1986 with a degree in business administration and worked as a broker for Cantor Fitzgerald on the 104^th floor of Tower One of the World Trade Center. During his time as a student at Oglethorpe, Salamone was a star player for the men’s soccer team. He served as team captain and was named to the All-District team and All-South teams multiple times. Former Coach Bucky Reynolds called him “the finest soccer player I ever coached.”

In 2002, Salamone was inducted into the Oglethorpe University Hall of Fame, and one of the soccer fields was officially named in his honor.

His legacy continues to live on through the work of the John P. Salamone Memorial Foundation, which awards the John P. Salamone Endowed Scholarship to Oglethorpe students who exemplify John’s spirit of love, devotion, and loyalty. Each year, Oglethorpe hosts the Salamone Alumni Soccer Tournament as part of Alumni Weekend to honor Salamone.

This year, John Salamone and the Salamone family will be honored immediately prior to the start of the men’s soccer match against Lynchburg on Friday, September 17 at 7 p.m. The weekend’s slate of matches will also celebrate the 60^th anniversary of Oglethorpe’s soccer program.

Salamone continues to be remembered for his competitive spirit, his sense of humor, and as a devoted and loving husband and father. The entire Oglethorpe community’s thoughts are with the Salamone family.
