Oglethorpe University was awarded $10,000 from Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta as part of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad Becas (IME) scholarship program.
The funds will benefit financial aid for students from Mexico or students of Mexican origin who are currently enrolled at Oglethorpe. Chris Summers ’03, director of financial aid, accepted on behalf of Oglethorpe at a ceremony held last semester at the Mexican Consulate.
Oglethorpe was selected by a local committee to receive the funds.
According to their website, IME Becas is a program implemented by the government of Mexico to support Hispanic students living in the United States who are completing basic education, higher basic or technological careers. The government of Mexico allocates funds to this program which can be complemented by other organizations that also support the educational advancement of Hispanic students.
“We thank you for your commitment to support the development and personal well-being of Mexicans living in the U.S. through education programs,” commented Consul General F. Javier Díaz de León.
