Campus Life

10 ways to stay connected during the remote semester!

As this semester-like-no-other begins, it’s important Petrels find ways to stay connected and keep a sense of campus community, whether you’re on or off campus. Here’s a list of how to stay “in the know” at Oglethorpe this semester:

  1. Read the latest. The Source website keeps the campus community informed about the latest university news. Plus, the newest Source stories are delivered right to your Oglethorpe email every Thursday. Have friends or family who are interested, too? Anyone can subscribe to these weekly newsletters on the bottom right-hand corner of the Source page!
  2. Fill your calendar. There are still events happening this semester! Campus Life, clubs and organizations, and academic departments are hard at work planning virtual or socially distanced programs to keep you busy and connected. Submit your events to OU Connect so everyone knows about your programs, and keep an eye out for the weekly Sunday email listing campus events for that week! (Pro tip: Follow the Programming Board on Instagram, and keep an eye on their OU Connect page so you don’t miss out on fun events!)
  3. Be social. Follow Oglethorpe University on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, as well as the OglethorpeLife Instagram account. Check out the social media directory to discover more OU-affiliated social media accounts.
  4. Get personal. What’s your role on campus—student, faculty, staff? Did you know there are personality profiles in the top right corner of the Oglethorpe website? Look for the gray “I am” box to find quick links specially curated for students, faculty and staff, alumni, and parents.
  5. Stay engaged. Follow Oglethorpe’s Student Government Association on Instagram to stay informed about how OU’s student representatives are supporting and advocating for students this year.
  6. Tune in. OU’s YouTube channel is packed with all kinds of fun and informative videos! From recorded information sessions to student interviews to event recordings, you can find a plethora of content on the page. Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss anything new posted to the channel!
  7. Up your game. Join a club or organization (like E-sports). Choose from a long list — or create your own! There’s still time to make your move–just check out the virtual Student Activity Fair sessions on OU Connect.
  8. Get culture. Although the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art (OUMA) is closed for the time being, you can still feel like you’re stepping into this unique part of the campus by taking the virtual tour! The OUMA website is full of information on upcoming exhibitions, videos of previous lectures hosted at OUMA, and more! Later in the semester, keep an eye out for a virtual tour of their fall exhibitions, plus online lectures and concerts.
  9. Take a stroll. Do you miss walking around campus? Do you wish you were doing homework on the patio outside of the Cousins Center? Pretend you’re there (or anywhere) by taking the university’s virtual tour of campus!
  10. Talk to us. Need help with research and resources? The library website has a new chat feature that makes it easy to ask questions.  Having a tough time? The Counseling Center makes it easier with virtual appointments. Wondering how to build your resume during these strange times? Connect with Career Development for tips, assistance and mentoring opportunities. Need an academic boost? The Student Success Center is ready and waiting to help.
