New ‘Makers Space’ workshop offers 3D printers, other hands-on equipment

The Cousins Center for Science and Innovation has opened a new Makers Space, located on the Physics level. The space is open to all students and faculty, as well as classes with a curriculum calling for use of the equipment.

The equipment and materials are currently free of charge—and students and faculty are encouraged to utilize these resources in Oglethorpe’s newest building. Physics major Stephen Myers ’20 is the student manager of the space and provides required training.

Take a look at what the Makers Space offers:

The band saw is used for cutting wood and soft metals, and provides a more even cut than traditional saws.

The drill press makes uniform round holes in pieces, and provides a more precise way of drilling, as compared to a traditional power drill.

The lathe can resize, face, bevel, and thread metals cut by the band saw.

To use the band saw, drill press, or lathe, individuals must set up an appointment with Dr. Justin Hugon, visiting assistant professor of physics, or student manager Stephen Myers to learn equipment safety.

The 3D printers create 3-dimensional objects out of plastic and have laser engraving capabilities.

To operate the printers, individuals must know how to design CAD objects, use CURA to prepare objects for printing, and general maintenance of the printer.

The space will also be “adding small tools and materials to the space to make it more functional,” according to Dr. Mariel Meier, assistant professor of physics.

For more information or to use the space, schedule an appointment with Dr. Hugon or Stephen Myers.
