The Oglethorpe men’s soccer team scored a pair of goals in the second half Saturday afternoon at a steaming hot Oglethorpe Track and Field, turning the tables on the Centre Colonels and earning a victory over their SAA rivals in the conference opener.
The Oglethorpe women’s soccer team had a tough evening Monday at Scotland Yard on Lookout Mountain in northwest Georgia, falling to the homestanding Covenant Scots 3-0. The result dropped the Stormy Petrels to 7-2 on the season. The Petrels held the Scots scoreless throughout the first half, despite being outshot 7-2.
The Oglethorpe women’s soccer team hung tough for a half against the No. 9 Centre Colonels Friday evening at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, traling just 1-0 at halftime. However, the Colonels pulled away in the second half, scoring five goals over a 21-minute stretch.
The Oglethorpe women’s golf team completed their weekend in a blazing hot Montgomery, Alabama, for the Montgomery Country Club Women’s Intercollegiate Sunday. They finished in fifth place out of 12 teams, tallying a two-round score of 51-over-par 627 to finish 27 strokes back of first-place Centre. They fired a 27-over 315 for the day.
The Oglethorpe men’s golf team closed out their stay at the Gordin Collegiate Classic with a 3-over-par 291 Tuesday at the Columbus Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. That performance served to move the Stormy Petrels up a spot into eighth place to close out the 54-hole tournament, putting them 34 strokes back of champion Illinois Wesleyan at 10-over 874 for the week.
The Oglethorpe women’s tennis team continued their stay at the Rome Tennis Center northwest Georgia Saturday at the ITA Division III South Regional Championships. Junior Lisette Phillips likely provided the highlight of the day for the Stormy Petrels, advancing all the way to the final of her B singles draw.
Men & WOMEN’S Cross Country
Men’s cross country reserves finish second at Sewanee Invitational; Brummett finishes sixth among women
The men’s cross country reserves finished second Saturday at the Sewanee Invitational in Tennessee, accruing five top 10 finishes on the morning. In addition, freshman Sarah Brummett finished sixth among 25 runners in the women’s 6-kilometer race. The Stormy Petrel men’s team finished second to Sewanee with 31 points to the Tigers’ 24.
The Oglethorpe volleyball team suffered a tough loss to the visiting Sewanee Tigers at Dorough Field House Sunday afternoon, dropping the match 3-1. The Stormy Petrels and Tigers split the first two sets, but Sewanee won the next two to clinch the match. The result dropped the Petrels to 5-10 overall and 0-5 in SAA play.
The Oglethorpe volleyball team looked in good shape Saturday afternoon at Dorough Field House, up 2-1 after three sets as they went in search of their first SAA win of the year. The visiting Centre Colonels won the final two sets, though, to flip the match around and win 3-2.
The Oglethorpe volleyball team competed toe-to-toe with the No. 1 Emory Eagles in Thursday’s opening set at the Woodruff PE Center, falling 27-25 after attaining set point at 25-24. Emory pulled away from there, though, taking the next two sets 25-11 and 25-18 to sweep the Stormy Petrels 3-0.
The Oglethorpe volleyball team fell to the visiting Covenant Scots in the opening set Wednesday night at Dorough Field House, but roared back over the next three to take down their opponent 3-1. Covenant won the first set 25-22, but the Stormy Petrels then ran off victories of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-18 to take the match.
