Summer Progress: Campus updates over the break

A lot happened around Oglethorpe in between commencement and the start of the fall semester.

While classes and labs were already in session at the I.W. “Ike” Cousins Center for Science and Innovation during the spring, the building is now fully open, furnished, and full of activity. The project, which broke ground the day after spring 2018 commencement, was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

In addition to housing biology, chemistry, physics and ecology facilities, the Cousins Center includes learning spaces for the new Hammack School of Business, in collaboration with Porsche Cars, N.A. and Global Payments.

The roadways and all surface parking lots are looking fresh — the campus received a complete repaving and repainting over the break.

It’s the first time the entire university has been repaved at one time. C.W. Matthews handled the massive project, which started in late May and had the bulk of the work done in about a week. Beyond the good news of a smoother and safer drive on campus, 80% of the old asphalt was recycled and 30% of the new asphalt is recycled content.

The Digital Media Lab has moved from Goodman Hall to the basement of the library. Two new DMLs featuring 15 iMac work stations are open for classes, as well as lab hours. Several studio spaces for video and audio editing are adjacent to the labs. The former DML in Goodman will be a shared space for eSports computers and music tech.
