Women’s lacrosse notches first conference win with 12-11 overtime victory over Berry, clinches spot in SAA tournament
The Oglethorpe women’s lacrosse team earned their first victory of the SAA season Tuesday evening at Valhalla stadium in Mount Berry, defeating Berry 12-11 in overtime on a sudden-death goal from senior attacker Madison Goss. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 5-8 overall and 1-5 in conference play and moved them into sixth place in the league standings.
Walker Benson was named SAA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, and the team would go on to beat Piedmont and Centre before dropping a contest to nationally-ranked Sewanee.
The Oglethorpe men’s tennis team fell behind after the doubles portion of the competition Saturday afternoon in Danville, Kentucky, but they came back with a vengeance, sweeping all six singles matches to defeat the homestanding Centre Colonels 7-2. The result improved the Stormy Petrels to 9-4 on the season overall and a perfect 3-0 in SAA play.
Track and field were not in action, but Nicolette Andrey did earn SAA Women’s Track Athlete of the Week for past performances.
Senior Nicolette Andrey of the Oglethorpe women’s track and field team earned the SAA Women’s Track Athlete of the Week award from the league’s coaches Wednesday. It marked her second SAA weekly award of the season after she earned women’s field honors March 13.
Men’s golf remains ranked 20th in the nation and recently took home 4th at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Championship.
The Oglethorpe men’s golf team finished in fourth place at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Championship Sunday on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The Stormy Petrels shot 9-over-par 301 on Sunday, dropping behind Methodist and North Carolina Wesleyan — who shot 299 — and Hampden-Sydney — who shot 300.
Women’s tennis got a nice win over regionally-ranked Piedmont.
The Oglethorpe women’s tennis team outlasted the regionally-ranked Piedmont Lions Wednesday afternoon at the Howell Courts, beating them 5-4 in a marathon match featuring four 3-set singles matches and three doubles matches decided by two games or less. The Stormy Petrels came from a set down in three separate singles matches to win and improved to 7-3 on the season.
Baseball and men’s lacrosse were winless over the week.
The Oglethorpe baseball team fell in both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Alabama, falling to the homestanding Birmingham-Southern Panthers 11-2 in Game 1 and 8-0 in Game 2. The results dropped the Stormy Petrels to 9-23 overall and 5-10 in SAA play.
