Athletics play a major role in a university like Oglethorpe.
More than 25-percent of the student body has been a part of at least one team while enrolled. And while many teams have experienced great success — such as the men’s soccer team which has captured four consecutive conference championships, or sophomore Jacob Hadden who became the first runner in 25 years to qualify for the NCAA tournament — to say sports have as much of an impact off the field as they do on would be an understatement.
These students are able to balance hours of practice with hours of course work. The Southern Athletic Association academic honor rolls counted 137 Oglethorpe student-athletes among its honorees last year, and 16 of those students also earned either scholar all-America or other national academic awards.
To help grow the excellence and legacy of Oglethorpe athletics and academics, and continue to enrich the lives of our student-athletes, the athletics department launched the Stormy Petrels Booster Club in January to ensure students a college experience that is second to none.
“The newly formed Stormy Petrels Booster Club is an important initiative that provides alumni, friends, and other individuals or groups the opportunity to support Oglethorpe Athletics,” Athletics Director Todd Brooks explains. “The establishment of such a program honors the institution’s proud athletic tradition of the past while helping us build for the future. The generosity of those who elect to give in this manner will go a long way in affording our outstanding young student-athletes a rewarding and enjoyable athletic experience.”
The Booster Club will fund improvements to facilities as well as day-to-day operations of the athletics department and teams, with funds going to benefit all teams equally. There is still an option, however, to donate directly to specific athletics programs through the Booster Club, with those teams guaranteed to receive a percentage of the donation.
