Women’s basketball breaks into coaches’ top 25

The Oglethorpe women’s basketball team moved into the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III top 25 this week, entering the poll tied for 25th.

It marked the program’s first national ranking since the end of the 2008-09 season, when they finished tied for eighth in the WBCA poll and ninth in the D3hoops.com poll.

The Stormy Petrels sit at 16-4 overall and 7-2 in SAA play, putting them in second place in the league. They’re currently a game back of first-place Millsaps and two games up on a third-place tie between Berry and Birmingham-Southern. They come off a weekend sweep at Dorough Field House as they beat Rhodes 65-55 on Friday — avenging one of their two conference losses on the season so far — and ran away from Hendrix 72-37 on Sunday.

The Petrels find themselves tied with 13-5 Washington (Missouri) at No. 25 in the poll. As for teams Oglethorpe has played this year, Mary Hardin-Baylor (19-1) checks in at No. 8 and Hope (16-3) at No. 10. Millsaps (17-3) featured among teams that received votes but did not crack the top 25.

Oglethorpe will take on Millsaps Sunday at Dorough Field House, with tip off time set for 1 p.m. Prior to that, they’ll host Birmingham-Southern Friday at 6 p.m.
