Both the women’s and men’s basketball teams were active over the winter break, and one player set a major career mark over the holidays.
At the Quality Suites Holiday Classic, hosted in Dorough Field House, the women split their two games. Fifth-ranked Hope College pulled away from the Petrels in game one, but the women rallied to wallop Calvin. An out of conference win over North Park helped Savannah Legate to her third SAA Player of the Week Award of the season. After beating Birmingham-Southern to open conference play 2-0, the team fell to Millsaps. Senior Lauren Ransom did, however, pass the 1,000 career points milestone in the game.
The Oglethorpe women’s basketball team was dealt their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon in Jackson, Mississippi, as they fell 66-57 to the homestanding Millsaps Majors in the Hangar Dome. The defeat dropped the Stormy Petrels to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in SAA play.
The men’s Comfort Inn and Suites Holiday Classic, also hosted in Dorough, went down similarly to the women’s, as the Petrels opened up play with a win over Ozark before dropping the contest between Bridgewater. The team also split two SAA conference games, beating Birmingham-Southern and falling to Millsaps.
The Oglethorpe men’s basketball team went back over .500 on the season and evened their SAA record with a 91-70 victory over Birmingham-Southern Friday night in Alabama. The Stormy Petrels outscored the homestanding Panthers 49-32 in the second half to pull away for the 21-point win, and improved to 7-6 on the season with a 1-1 conference tally.
Senior men’s golfer Jacob Arnett finished tied for 19th at the 2018 Patriot All-America invitational in Arizona.
