Oglethorpe celebrates National Voter Registration Day with 100+ students newly registered

Celebrated annually on the fourth Tuesday in September, National Voter Registration Day began in 2012 to celebrate American democracy and focus attention on the importance of registering to vote. Oglethorpe has been making efforts across campus to ensure that all students over 18 are registered to vote and given every opportunity to participate in the democratic process.

Volunteers from The New Georgia Project set up in the campus center to help students register to vote.

Leading up to National Voter Registration Day, the Atlanta Laboratory for Learning partnered with the nonpartisan group The New Georgia Project and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to host multiple on-campus registration drives. The drives resulted in more than 100 students registering to vote.

Oglethorpe also partnered with the TurboVote platform, which allows students to register online or request a paper form. Students are reminded and prompted to register when logging into OUConnect, Oglethorpe’s events and activities website.

Every year, millions of American are blindsided by their inability to vote because they have missed a deadline or have not updated their registration. The deadline to register to vote in Georgia is October 9, with Midterm Elections scheduled for November 6.
