“Writing the South” class gets shout-out on literary podcast featuring OU professor

Jessica Handler’s WRI 290 course, “Writing the South,” recently got a mention on the preeminent Atlanta bookish podcast.

Host of the Literary Atlanta podcast, Alison Law, was a guest speaker in Handler’s class and then had her as a guest on the podcast.

Jessica Handler is the author of Braving the Fire: A Guide to Writing About Grief and Loss and Invisible Sisters: A Memoir. She talked with Alison Law about her experience attending the funeral for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 50th anniversary of King’s death.

Students from “Writing the South” presented “Tell About the South: Three Contemporary Voices Address the Meaning of Their South” as part of the recent Liberal Arts and Sciences Symposium. Handler moderated the panel which included Shalonda Cash, Justine Blandine Tchouaffe and Jake Van Valkenburg.

Handler is author of the books Braving the Fire: A Guide to Writing About Grief and Loss, Invisible Sisters: A Memoir, and the forthcoming The Magnetic Girl. In addition to her writing, Handler talked with Alison Law about her experience attending the funeral for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 50th anniversary of the civil rights leader’s death.
