Oglethorpe University President Larry Schall was a featured guest this week on WABE’s Closer Look with Rose Scott where they discussed Oglethorpe’s growth over the past 12 years and the university’s focus going forward.

During the 20-minute interview, topics included Oglethorpe’s announcement in September of a $50 million gift from alumnus Bill Hammack ’73 to establish a new school of business, as well as the new Cousins Center for Science and Innovation and an increased strategic focus on international student recruitment. “Oglethorpe students look like America,” said President Schall, “(but) we want to look like the world.”

Schall also discussed Oglethorpe’s presence in Atlanta as a “small, intimate learning environment” that’s “producing broadly educated accountants…doctors…engineers,” as well as timely topics like DACA and Title IX, and President Schall’s legacy at the school.  “It’s a different Oglethorpe than it was 13 years ago, but still much the same.”

He even managed to fit in a little trash talk about the recent 3-1 victory of Oglethorpe Men’s Soccer over crosstown rival Emory University.

Oglethorpe University was first chartered in 1835 just outside of Milledgeville. Today, Oglethorpe enrolls just over 1,200 students, and most recently the university received a historic $50 million to establish a new school of business, the largest gift that has been donated to the school.
