This Week’s Service and Engagement Opportunities

civic engagementAlready this school year, the Oglethorpe community has showcased so many of the characteristics that make this campus incredibly special. You all have already made a difference in communities around Atlanta!

I’m excited to tell you about a number of ways that you can serve communities near and far this week (or learn more about how to serve in the near future). Please join the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) and a few of our friends for the following events or projects:

1. The A_LAB is holding a supply drive to collect much-needed items for those affected by Harvey. We’re collecting school supplies, hygiene products (for both women and men), diapers, clothes, bottled water, canned/nonperishable food, and blankets. You can find collection bins in and near the A_LAB. We’re collecting items until Friday, September 15. If you have questions, please email Miriam Smith.

2. The CCE is hosting a Kickoff event THIS Thursday, September 7. Please meet us in Meeting Room 225 in the A_Lab at 5 PM to learn more about Alternative Break trips and our new initiatives, including Atlanta Ambassadors trips, Difficult Dialogues, and Service Saturdays! You can use this occasion to grab an Alternative Break trip application too. If you have questions, please email Dr. Matt Wild. If you have questions about Alternative Break trips specifically, please email LaBreshia Taylor .

3. You have an opportunity to participate in a fun Service Saturdays event this weekend! The Black Student Caucus (BSC) is partnering with the CCE to host a fun afternoon with Drew students. The whole campus is invited to join the BSC to help Drew students decorate garden pots and plant seeds. Afterwards, enjoy some barbecue and great conversation! We hope to see you THIS Saturday at 12 PM on the Quad. For more information, please email Dr. Matt Wild or Deon Heavens .

I look forward to continuing to serve YOU while you serve communities near and far!
