Dr. Knippenberg adds essay to Supreme Court series

Dr. Joseph Knippenberg, professor of politics, recently published an essay with Constituting America on the history of the country’s judicial system.

The essay, Engel v. Vitale (1962) And Everson v. Ewing (1962), is part of a 90-day series on the landmark decisions of the United States Supreme Court and the justices who made them. Engel v. Vitale was a case heard about prayer in school.

In Engel v. Vitale (370 U.S. 421 [1962]), the Supreme Court took up the question of school prayer and rejected as unconstitutional the New York state practice of beginning each school day with the recitation of the Regent’s Prayer.
