Oglethorpe receives national recognition for community service, named to President’s Honor Roll

honorroll-logo-2014-web1Oglethorpe University has been named to the 2015 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement.

Oglethorpe is the only college in Georgia to make the honor roll every year since its inception in 2006.

Each year, the President of the United States recognizes higher education institutions that reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful, measurable outcomes in communities through service. The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community challenges and as a result, more students are likely to pursue a lifelong path of civic engagement that achieves meaningful and measurable outcomes in the communities they serve.

The Corporation for National and Community Service administers the award in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education, Campus Compact, and the Interfaith Youth Core.

How did Oglethorpe make the grade? During the 2014-2015 academic year at Oglethorpe:

  • 703 students engaged in community service
  • 192 students engaged in at least 20 hours of community service per academic term
  • 135 students engaged in academic service-learning
  • 6595 community service hours were engaged in by the institutions students
The Center for Civic Engagement in Oglethorpe’s Atlanta Laboratory for Learning was founded in fall of 2006 to expand, enhance and promote faculty, staff and student connections with the City of Atlanta through service-learning, volunteer internships, leadership development and community outreach. CCE programs include four annual service days in Atlanta as well as alternative breaks, which provide opportunities for students to participate in week-long community service projects in other locations.

U students volunteer in Atlanta and around the world. In 2014-2015, the Men's Basketball team traveled to Costa Rica and volunteered at a youth program, and the Baseball team taught skills to children from Atlanta's Drew Charter School.

OU students and athletic teams volunteer in Atlanta and around the world. In 2014-2015, the Men’s Basketball team (above) traveled to Costa Rica, where they volunteered at a children’s center.
