Career website Zippia recently published its rankings for the top colleges in Georgia for economics majors. Oglethorpe University was ranked among the top three institutions in the state with the best opportunities for economics graduates. “Oglethorpe grads command the highest salaries once they leave the economics department for their first jobs,” Zippia cites in its top 10 rundown.

Zippia’s rankings are based on data from the NCES (National Center For Education Statistics) and College Scorecard data from ED.gov. To understand which economics departments offer the best career opportunities, the following factors were considered:

  • Career Results: Mean Earnings After 6 Years; Mean Earnings After 10 Years; Ratio of people working to not working after 10 years
  • Economics Emphasis: Percentage of Graduating Class That Are Economics Majors (Larger the better)
  • School Performance: Admissions Rate (More selective the better); Graduation Rate; Average Cost Of Attendance (Lower is better); Average amount of debt
According to Zippia, after gathering this data for all economics programs in Georgia, “we then ranked each of these schools for each of the criteria above with 1 being the best in any given criteria. Next, we averaged the ranks for each school to create an ‘Economics Quality Index’.” The schools with the highest scores were ranked accordingly on Zippia’s list.
