Oglethorpe Day 2016

A beloved tradition, Oglethorpe Day annually celebrates our university’s namesake with the “Petrels of Fire” race around the quad and a guest speaker.

This year, we welcomed Jason Carter, former Georgia state senator and Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Carter Center.

SGA provided free Chick-fil-A biscuits to students to kick off the Oglethorpe Day celebration and local Atlanta band The Black Sheep Ensemble made sure that everyone knew where the party was! They played while guests enjoyed refreshments on the quad before the Petrels of Fire race began. The race drew a record number of runners this year. One was Provost Glenn Sharfman!

After the race, the crowd moved down to Conant Performing Arts Center to hear from Mr. Carter. That was followed by a reception on the Conant Veranda featuring the traditional refreshment, Coke floats, plus samples of Treehouse Milk, a company owned by Jason Carter’s wife, Katie, and more festive music from the Black Sheep Ensemble.

HAPPY OGLETHORPE DAY! See you next year….
