Oglethorpe Welcomes 400 New Students, Record Freshman Class

Move-in Day 20151In fall 2015, Oglethorpe University welcomed more than 400 new students, including a record freshman class of 322 students. This represents a 16+ percent growth over last year’s freshman class.

New Oglethorpe students hail from 21 states and 15 countries; 24 are international students and an additional 13 are exchange students.

Within the Class of 2019, 22 percent self-identify as first-generation—the first in their family to attend a four-year college.

The top majors selected by members of the freshman class are: Biology, Business, Engineering-Dual Degree and Psychology.

Keeping on trend, 33% of freshmen are student-athletes, members of Oglethorpe’s 16 athletic teams. The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels compete within NCAA Division III and are part of the Southern Athletic Association.

Oglethorpe University has entered an era of innovation, re-invigoration, and growth, evidenced by this dramatic rise in enrollment—as well as increased philanthropic giving and new strategic entrepreneurial partnerships. Fueling this growth is a strong commitment real-world, hands-on experience and career preparation, combined with a unique multidisciplinary liberal arts curriculum. To accommodate growth, Oglethorpe’s campus has recently seen the addition of a new $16 million campus center, the expansion of arts and athletics facilities, and the addition of a new residential apartment complex that will include 6,000 square feet of state-of-the-art laboratories for teaching and learning.

Oglethorpe continues to be ranked among the nation’s best colleges by U.S. News & World Report, USA Today, Princeton Review, and Washington Monthly. In 2015, FORBES named Oglethorpe among America’s Most Entrepreneurial Colleges.
