Dr. Devon Belcher Receives Meritorious Teaching Award

Dr. Devon Belcher, assistant professor of philosophy at Oglethorpe University, was honored with the Lu Thomasson Garrett ’52 Award for Meritorious Teaching at the university’s annual Honors & Awards Ceremony on April 12, 2013.

This award was established in 1994 through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. David (Lu Thomasson) Garrett. The late Mrs. Garrett was a 1952 Oglethorpe graduate, an honorary degree recipient, and member emerita of the Board of Trustees. The prize is awarded annually to an outstanding faculty member selected by a committee of his or her peers.

Dr. Belcher earned a B.A. in Philosophy from Reed College in Portland, Ore., and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Colorado. Dr. Belcher joined the Oglethorpe University faculty in 2008.

The award was presented by Dr. Seema Shrikhande, who commended Dr. Belcher as “an engaging lecturer who knows how to motivate students” and ” to make abstract concepts relevant to students’ experiences.”
