Internship Spotlight: Newell Rubbermaid internal auditing experience

When accounting major Cory Leff ’13 took his first auditing class in the spring semester, it wasn’t his first experience in the subject. His internship with Atlanta-based Newell Rubbermaid, a global marketer of consumer and commercial products that touches millions of people every day, had already given him a hands-on lesson in internal auditing.

As an intern, Cory was responsible for assessing the company’s internal controls, finances, and business operations.  He looked into how the company operated and was responsible for determining how it could improve.  Furthermore, he was in charge of making sure that accountability was in place and that the company ran smoothly.

“It gave me my first taste of real world experience,” he said.  “I basically didn’t have any idea what I was doing when I went in, and they taught me it all—I had a chance to learn something about everything.”

“Be open to any experience you may have,” Cory advised other aspiring interns. “I was able to learn on the job and craft my experiences into the job I wanted.”
