OUr Amazing Race Tests Alcohol Awareness, Teamwork

On Friday afternoon, over 60 Petrels participated in a test of brains and brawn in OUr Amazing Race, a campus-wide contest that combined alcohol awareness with a little old-fashioned fun.

Like the hit CBS TV show, “The Amazing Race,” students raced throughout campus in teams of four, avoiding  a series of “roadblocks” and “detours” on their way to the finish line.

The event, sponsored by the student volunteers of OU Safety, put a different spin on alcohol education by featuring team contests such as ‘SOBER’ (that works like the basketball shoot-around game ‘HORSE’) and a 400-meter three-person, five-legged race. Racers were warned to choose their participants wisely because it wasn’t all about who could run the fastest, jump the highest, or throw the farthest.  Some challenges, like trivia stops, were pure exercise for the brain.

In true D-III fashion, the first team to cross the finish line was made up of star athletes: Todd Ward ’11, Branden Jovaag ’13, Christian Molinet ’13, and Joe Kennedy ’11 of the Men’s Basketball team.  They each won a $100 gift card to use anywhere VISA will take them.
