The inaugural Employee Recognition Luncheon was held on Monday in the new Turner Lynch Campus Center, and a number of staff and faculty members were recognized for their exceptional service to Oglethorpe.

Oglethorpe staff members were invited to nominate their peers for six new staff awards that recognized individuals who have gone “beyond the call of duty.” All awards included a monetary prize. A total of 21 nominations were submitted for this year’s awards.

The top Staff Member of the Year Award for the 2012-13 academic year went to Montrey Jackson, systems & communications analyst in IT Services. His award was presented by coworker and nominator Al Fuller, who highlighted Montrey’s willingness to always stop what he’s doing to help anyone in the OU community. Montrey personally took it upon himself to research and implement the necessary steps for a gaming network on campus and has been integral in researching and implementing cost saving measures. When OU recently lost power across the entire campus, Montrey came to work even though employees were told to stay at home, in order to ensure that Oglethorpe’s network became functional. He is a consummate professional and has exemplified being a team player through his conduct, generosity, and service-oriented approach.

Winners of staff awards, Katie Paden, Judy Zahn, Montrey Jackson, Suzy Lane, Laura Sinclair and Heather Staniszewski.

Zipcar is coming to Oglethorpe!

Signing up is easy!

Signing up is easy!

Students, faculty and staff—we have a new addition to our campus this fall!  “Zipcar for Universities” will provide a new way to navigate the city. Zipcar is car-sharing service that enables patrons to reserve a car for either a few hours or for an entire day.

Perfect for students who lack their own mode of transportation—or are tired of asking friends for rides—Zipcar gives you freedom and some pretty great perks. As part of the deal, while you’re using Zipcar, you’re protected with insurance and are provided a gas card to fill up whenever you need. A standard day’s fee allows up to 180 miles of travel, but can be easily extended at any time. And, as their website says, “Zipcar for Universities offers the convenience of car ownership without the hassles of having a car on campus.”

Just tap your Zipcard and GO!

The process is simple: after registering, easily reserve your time to drive directly from your computer or cell phone. Once it’s time to drive, unlock your car with your zipcard and you’re ready to go.

In order to partake in the Zipcar experience you must be 18 or older and have a valid driver’s license. To register, go to Zipcar’s website exclusively for Oglethorpe, where you can receive a discounted application fee and learn more details about their services.

Omicron Delta Kappa Taps 2012 Inductees, Launches Fundraising Campaign

As the holiday season approaches, your thoughts may turn to buying gifts, decorating your homes, or celebrating break with family and friends.   But for me, one thing comes to mind before any thoughts of winter vacation: there is a pig raring to be kissed, and some of you may see me kiss him.

Boar’s Head is an annual OU event centered around the annual induction ceremony of Omicron Delta Kappa, an esteemed leadership society that serves to recognize students, faculty, staff, and alumni for their service in at least one of five key areas.  On November 30th, 17 new members will be inducted into OΔK, including Oglethorpe Trustee Arnold Sidman.

Trustee Arnie Sidman

“Arnie Sidman deserves this honor and we are very happy to recognize him,” says Jef Palframan ’13, current President of Oglethorpe’s OΔK Circle. “(We) are trying to move beyond just students to more faculty, alumni, staff, and trustee members… This shows that leadership doesn’t just start in your junior or senior year. It’s for a lifetime.”

Also being inducted are Dr. Mario Chandler and Dr. Nicholas Maher, alumni Eli Arnold ’06 and staff member Katie Paden.  There are also 12 student inductees: Brittney Blalock ’14, Tirzah Brown ’14, Kirsten Glaeser ’14, Krista Gray ’14, Justin Munson ’14, Corey Ray ’14, Kate Siess ’14, Kendall Burke ’13, Jeet Budha Magar ’13, Marisa Manuel ’13, Caitlyn Mitchell ’13, and Lindsey Mitchell ’13.

In addition, through the end of November, you can assist the OΔK Circle by donating to their fundraising campaign.  The campaign’s purpose is to help Oglethorpe’s OΔK Circle become self sufficient for at least the next five years.  More than half of the $5000 goal has already been achieved, and OΔK hopes to double this goal. OΔK aspires to become self-sufficient and not require SGA funding, because membership is exclusive and extended beyond the student body.

If you would like to come to the Boar’s Head Concert & Celebration on November 30th, don’t forget to reserve your ticket by calling 404-504-1074 or visiting the Conant Performing Arts Center box office.
