Go Petrels Athletics Update: Aug 30-Sept 5

The Stormy Petrels fall sports squads are all in action and the accolades have already started coming in.

The men’s cross country team placed second at the Watermelon Run in Mount Berry, Ga. over the weekend, and sophomore Jacob Hadden ’21 placed second overall for his individual time, earning him SAA Runner of Week honors. It’s Hadden third time receiving the award.

At the Lakeland University Volleyball Tournament in Plymouth, Wisconsin, sophomore outside hitter Jacoby Sims ’21 had 22 kills over four games to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.

Women’s soccer is starting the season undefeated with two wins after coming from behind against Brevard on Sunday. Freshman Grace Henderson’s first collegiate goal in the 82nd minute secured the victory.

The season started the same way it ended for the men’s soccer team, as it fell to nationally-ranked Washington and Lee to open its schedule. Washington and Lee knocked Oglethorpe out of the NCAA DIII tournament in 2017. The team rallied for a win over Hardin-Simmons to even its record, and hosts nationally-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor this Friday in the team’s home opener.
