Food & fashion: Greek organizations fundraise for a cause

Each of the nine social Greek organizations flexed their culinary skills to help make a difference at a local nonprofit.

A resounding success, Oglethorpe’s October Family Weekend welcomed more than 320 visitors to campus—and featured the first “philanthropy-forward Friday,” led by Oglethorpe’s Greek community. This new effort raised more than $900 for two local nonprofits, with $502 going to March of Dimes and $400 to Children’s Miracle Network.

All nine social Greek organizations hosted food “truck” booths and sold their own signature food item. Each organization was judged on food selection, booth creativity, and spirit of brotherhood/sisterhood. The winning organization earned the honor of selecting the nonprofit where ALL of the evening’s proceeds would be donated. Tri Sigma (pictured above) was declared the winner and chose March of Dimes of Georgia. Many of Sigma Sigma Sigma’s efforts revolve around “Sigma Serves Children,” their focused commitment to engaging in a variety of efforts for the betterment of children around the world, including philanthropic support for hospital play therapy programs for children.

The Children’s Miracle Network benefited from a one-of-a-kind fashion show, presented by Oglethorpe’s pre-medical fraternity, Phi Delta Epsilon. Keeping the focus on medicine, models were painted to illustrate human body systems, which were then explained as they walked the runway.

“Thank you to all of the models, artists and fraters who took part in Phi Delta Epsilon’s inaugural Anatomy Fashion Show,” said biopsychology major Elias Castro ’17, president of Phi Delta Epsilon. “Our first show raised $400 for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and the money will benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. We could not have accomplished this without everyone’s support!”

“If you were not able to make it to the show,” he continued, “don’t fret, as planning is already underway for next year’s show. It’s set to be our best one yet!”
