Dr. Seema Shrikhande, associate professor of communication and rhetoric studies, was honored at Oglethorpe University’s commencement ceremony in May 2012 with the Lu Thomasson Garrett Award for Meritorious Teaching. The award was presented by Dr. Leah Zinner, who highlighted Dr. Shrikhande’s devotion to her students, adding that “some students refer to her as their mom away from home.”

This award was established in 1994 through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. David (Lu Thomasson) Garrett. The late Mrs. Garrett was a 1952 Oglethorpe graduate, an honorary degree recipient, and member emerita of the Board of Trustees. The prize is awarded annually to an outstanding faculty member selected by a committee of his or her peers.

Dr. Shrikhande earned a B.A. in English from Elphinstone College in Bombay, India, an M.A. in Economics from Bombay University, an M.A. in Communication from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. in Mass Media from Michigan State University. She joined the faculty at Oglethorpe University in 1998.
